i read this post that dan andriano [of alkaline trio] covered "there is a place in hell for me and my friends". cool. i wish i could hear it.

showdown lowdown

there are some t.v. shows that make me laugh/put a smile on my face everytime i watch it:

the simpsons, freaks n geeks, seinfeld [to name a few]

there are other shows that surprise me too. every now and again on wednesdays i watch ed. maybe it's a bowling thing, but it's pretty entertaining. i guess i dream about owning a lex bowl one day. although, i have no desire to be a lawyer.

are there any shows that suprise you?

wednesday: the weekend recap

so this past weekend was crazy. so much so that on sunday someone (i think rodeorob) asked, "hey alex, what did you do on friday?" and my answer, "i don't remember." i think i watched t.v. or something.

on saturday i went over to my parents house to celebrate my niece's birthday. man, she knows how to party at age 3. pinatas, toys, and cake. pretty cool stuff.

sunday i got up at 7 a.m. to take technical pictures. then i went and did errands, watched some football, went to sunflower for a co-worker sendoff (as in move to l.a.) dinner, then i was up until 3 a.m. i couldn't sleep so i worked on my blog layout.

actually for a couple of days in a row i couldn't sleep until 3 a.m. so i'm kind of tired now.

i've figured out that i'm definitely not a morning person, but i do have to say you can get a lot of crap done if you are ever forced to wake at an ungodly hour.

oh, i heard some more ryan adams today. it was playing at the krackhaus. and the song "nuclear" is o.k. i just can't get into the whole album. if you so choose, go here for sound clips.

also, i sold some free promo cd's, then bought the simpsons complete second dvd set for $11. score!

week/whirlwind/year, part 1

exactly one year ago, i started this blog. time is definitely flying and i'm having fun every step of the way. anyway, to mark this anniversary i decided to give bad with names a long overdue facelift. it's not a drastic change, mainly b/c 1) i don't know that much HTML and 2) i know someone will help me fix the glitches and eyesores eventually. [yes, i know there is not too much you can do with the color gold, but i'm trying to figure a way.] i might mess around with it some more tomorrow. but for now, it's time for some shut-eye. i am tired. it's 3 a.m.

this week has been a whirlwind, i have much to say. more details to come.....

splitting the duties

the matt skiba/kevin seconds split is out now. feels like they went into the basement with their acoustic guitars and recorded on a 4 track. wowzers. it's really good.

sigur ros' new album is coming out oct. 28th. check out the s.ros 2002 autumn tour dates.

saves the day are coming to the 9:30 club oct. 24th.

right now i'm swimming in the posse cuts [july/aug. 2002]. it's really good grooves to nod your head to. so much so, ryan deserves a shout out for putting all these songs together. full of posse. full of flava. bueno.

oddly enough, an australian company is creating alcoholic milkshakes. moo joose anyone?

if anyone has any suggestions for a good portfolio idea, let me know. [p.s. no, i don't think i'll do one on car accidents]

simple joys in life

so i spent most of yesterday hanging out with family. i picked up my niece from pre-school and she was so happy to see me. it brought a smile to my face when she said "i love you uncle". then she turned to my sister and said "uncle's my friend." smile. smile. gush.

i also tried to work on my photography technical assignment: ISO test. the problem is i'm not very good at the technical aspects of anything. so i was getting really frustrated. but these are the situations where you step back and think, "i'm complaining about something so little and stupid. it could be worse." well, i'm gonna do the test later this week. i'm a procrastinator anyway.

shout out to ryan for posting thoughts of others [concerning 9/11].

more quotes:

"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of Truth and Love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it. Always." -- Gandhi [via: matt @ a whole lotta nothing]

"If you really want to make 9/11 special, turn off the TV and tune into your family" -- chris @ o'donnellweb. well said.

today, this wednesday, 2002:

i will remember, in my own way, those who lost their lives and their loved ones.

i will also:
-pick up my niece from school, which makes me extremely happy.
-take pictures for class.

i will not:
-turn on the t.v. or the radio.

two quotes for this day:

"the best revenge is living well" -anonymous [via: corey]

"But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be conductive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings—that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide." -the Buddha [via: laze]

touring news: the donnas are playing the black cat on nov. 13th. sweet!

last day rockerface

tonight i went to see phantom planet. i have to say. they produce some of the catchiest songs i've heard in a long time. i mean, even songs of theirs i don't like (ex: the song "anthem" where the chorus "'cause this whole world needs an anthem/and i'm trying to put the words where they belong/yeah this whole world needs an anthem/and i'm hoping everyone will sing along") gets stuck in my head. so they played "lonely day" and that was enough to make me happy. plus they covered "pump it up", which was very good.

oh, superdrag and ok-go opened. i only got to see three songs of super drag, none of ok-go. sd played "destination ursa major". good enough for me. my friend carrie put that on a mix tape for me in 1998. part of a trifecta mixtape series for my trip out to california. they saved my behind and provided many hours of entertainment to accompany me on the long journey. and for that i was/am still very grateful to her mix tape expertise.

speaking of shows, i might go to my first jaxx show ever next month. my co-worker introduced me to in flames, the so-called swedish iron maiden. and they pretty much rock your face off. yes, you end up faceless. i don't really listen to metal too much, but this band kind of grew on me.

according to their website, alkaline trio is playing a halloween show. too bad it's in chicago damnit. also matt skiba's solo stuff should be coming out soon. my friend is gonna let me borrow a cd-r of some of those songs. i guess he downloaded them from the net.

saturday boardrooms

from saturday til now, i have had some pretty adventurous days/nights. on saturday i hung out with stew, stephanie, and john. we went to mexicali blues to eat some platanos and other mexican delights. most of all it was good to see stew who was back from basic training (CA) to update us on his intense life. apparently he's big pimpin' in his b.m.w. while occassionally doing push-ups and learning arabic. wowzers!

then after hanging out with that crew, i went over to corey and kristy's to play board games (cranium and trivial pursuit millenium edition) with a lot of peeps. it was a pretty good time. dudes vs. gals.
dudes: 2, gals: 0
* the dudes took a long time to answer each question and most of them were guesses. but we got enough of them right.
* damn, i missed the lexicon limousine question in cranium. i'm so ashamed.

(i'm gonna try and go bowling one of the weekend days/nights in september. who's in?)

on sunday, i went to see the weakerthans/greg mcpherson/rocking horse winner show with corey. i have to say that was one of the better shows i've been to in a long time. the lead singer for rocking horse winner reminded me of juliana hatfield, voice-wise. greg mcpherson played some pretty rockin' tunes and most of them were without a pick. he must have super fingers to deal with that. and the weakerthans were all i expected and more. considering how long i've waited to see them, it was well worth it. john k. samson even said "aboooooot" instead of "about". gosh i love canadians.

i was really amazed when corey told me he overheard someone say "that wasn't worth $10". all three bands were worth it. very worth it.

now i'm looking forward to seeing phantom planet (next monday), neko case (oct. 2nd), and two wilco shows (oct. 14 and 15th @ the 9:30 club)

the start of september makes me wanna say...

happy anniversary ryan and huyen! i wish you many more years of happiness together.

oh, and i also want to say how time flies. it's already month 9.
